The earthquake that shook Japan in March 2011, and the terrible tsunami that followed, destroyed or damaged over 270,000 buildings and left several hundred thousand homeless. Damage to the nuclear reactor at Fukushima spread a wide swath of radiation.
The international community responded immediately. Many set aside their own lives to search for victims, offer medical care, and assist with the rebuilding. This video was made by the people of Tohoku, as a way of saying thank you. They dedicate it to Taylor Anderson, a teacher of English who lost her life after staying to make sure all students were safe.
The video captures the generosity and dedication of volunteers from around the world. It also portrays the gratitude of people whose lives were forever charged that March and shows the extraordinary progress that has been made in rebuilding their lives.
I’ve watched it three times now and cried each time. It is a beautiful testament to friendship and generosity, freely offered. Watching it gives me hope.
Thank you, Judith, for sending the link.
